OBEY YOUR MASTER Art Exhibition: 2012 at Exhibit A Gallery. Art tribute to the band Metallica. 44 Artists create 44 visual representation pieces of art based on the songs of Metallica.
EXHIBIT TO BE UNVEILED ON JANUARY 20, 2012 IN LOS ANGELES
Los Angeles, CA – August 22, 2011 – Exhibit A Gallery founder / artist Richard Villa III and legendary skateboarder Tony Alva announced today the Obey Your Master art exhibit. Obey Your Master will feature a collection of artists from the worlds of Art, Fashion, Film, Music and Skateboarding coming together to pay tribute to Metallica.
For the exhibit, the artists have all chosen a song by the heroes of metal, and will execute their vision in their individual artistic mediums, based on their interpersonal relationship to Metallica’s lyrics and music. The final art pieces will represent each chosen song, and will be revealed on January 20th, 2012 at Exhibit A Gallery to a private reception, with all of the artists and Metallica in attendance. The pieces will be available for purchase starting that evening, through March 23, 2012.
Rock music has always inspired fans and creative types alike, empowering and influencing them personally, sonically and artistically. Some examples of the influence of Metallica’s music on artists are with Obey Giant’s renowned street artist Shepard Fairey and his politically driven propaganda art. One could make the connection between Fairey’s art and an album like Metallica’s …And Justice for All. Starting in the early 1980′s, iconic skateboarder, Steve Caballero during skate competitions would correlate his music with his aggressive skate style, he would insist to organizers to turn up the volume and blast songs off Metallica’s Kill Em’ All album. Contemporary Metal band Black Veil Brides’ 20 year old frontman Andy Biersack, grew up listening to Heavy Metal music. One of his most fond memories of early adolescence, was sitting in his living room with his childhood friend watching Metallica VHS tapes. They would thrash along, singing every lyric and banging their heads until their necks felt as if they had been in a car crash. He states “As I got older and began to write my own songs, the tone and style of James’ lyrics and singing became a huge influence to me. The use of religious and cult metaphors and tenacity with which he sang was something I aspired to, and to this day continue to be inspired by. Metallica to me is the quintessential Heavy Metal band. Equal parts darkness, intellect and vitriol”. These are just a few examples, but there have been millions more who have drawn influence from Metal music, specifically from Metallica. Many of these artists are from all walks of life, they are now leaving their own indelible marks on the world and are driven in part by the intellectual rebellious lyrics of Metallica. Most of these creative fans have never had the opportunity to do any art related to the band…
Until now!

The fingerboarding community is an extension of traditional skateboarding. Fingerboarding has grown in mass popularity and is a lifestyle to many since the early 90s. To unite the communities of skateboarding, fingerboarding and art. Binded and inspired by the history and culture of bowl riding, and to present a unique expression of this root of the skate culture, Exhibit A Gallery is holding an art exhibition on November 30, 2013 titled “ A BOMB IN A BOWL” The Art of Bombed Miniature Concrete Skate Bowls.
From the late 1970's one man's drought is another man’s blessing, the skate "Bowl" is born.
In Southern California, hundreds maybe thousands of empty swimming pools laid to waste. A baron wasteland, overgrown backyards of dried up or algae infested pools. Skateboarders and graffiti artists would descend like vultures on dying carcasses to leave their mark. The lines of the urethane wheels or the spray painted abominations were left behind as scars of remembrance. After the recession and drought, pools would be renovated and filled. A return to the laughter of children and their families in their backyard oasis. But many of these concrete monuments would meet their demise to demolition, an eye sore that only an Artist could appreciate, there would be nothing left but memories and a few pictures.
To pay homage to the history of bowl riding and the visual esthetics surrounding this punk attitude culture. Ten Contemporary Artists and Pro Skateboarders will Bomb miniature concrete poured skate bowls. These bowls are not Toys, but concrete replicas of a real skate bowl, encased in a custom maple wood stand. Each artist will hand paint their style of art and subject matter. Bombing artists are Tony Alva, Christian Hosoi, Steve Caballero, Jake Brown, Mimi Knoop, RISK, Nathan Ota, Richard Villa III, Esao Andrews, Joshua Petker and more.
One of the most famous bowl of all time was the "DOGBOWL"
“The "Dogbowl" became world famous, as well as the skaters and their groundbreaking sessions. Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Stacy Peralta, Bob Biniak, Paul Constantineau, Wes Humpston, Ray Flores, Jim Muir, Wentzl Ruml, Shogo Kubo, Baby Paul Cullen. Writer, Craig Stecyk & photographer Glen E. Friedman documented most of the sessions, along with "Skateboard World" magazine, they photographed regularly with the Z-boys and have published iconic images that have inspired generations.
Whether it is the "Dogbowl", "The Keyhole" in Beverly Hills, "The Fruitbowl" in Garden Grove, "The Gonzales" bowls. These pools were where the birthplace of innovational moves, like Tony Alva's "frontside air", "figure eights", "forevers", "wheelers" "hip riding" & shallow end carves. Bowls in general have played an important part in the development of modern skateboarding and still do. They are the playgrounds, battlegrounds the concrete canvases of these creative, adrenaline fueled misfits.
Exhibit A Gallery has alway done art exhibitions, simply for the sake of the art. To help promote creativity, to give those with a voice a platform to be heard. Giving opportunities to lesser known artists to be shown side by side with some of the best contemporary artists. A place where all walks of life are welcome, a place for all creatives to congregate. This will be the first art show where the public at large is be asked to participate, and yes we believe it's a participation. Exhibit A Gallery has never had a problem coming up with innovative and cutting edge art shows, but it has always been a challenge to pay for the cost of the overhead. Not all art shows make money, and if they do, they don't quite pay for the total cost of the reception or the duration of the running of the exhibition. This has never stop Exhibit A Gallery from getting art to the world. As long as there are good creative ideas and a will, there is always a way. We hope that Kickstarter is a new way for us to bring the community of art enthusiast to Exhibit A Gallery. Its those of you that appreciate creatively, is why we are here and doing what we do. It's a monetary world we live in, it takes money to survive, and unfortunately it takes money for creativity to reach it's audience. This is where you can help us move forward one exhibition at a time.
Regardless of the campaign outcome, we will always move against the grain and true art will prevail.
That being said, we have never had the full financial resources to do a show without restrictions. Thanks to Kickstarter crowd funding, this now seems possible. Your donations will be greatly appreciated and in turn you will have access to some INSANE! rewards, many which will only be available through this Kickstarter campaign!
